Gravel is one of the most practical ground covers you can use in a Phoenix yard — low-maintenance, good for drainage, and a natural fit for the desert environment. The right material installed the right way looks sharp and stays in place.
How gravel installation works: The area is excavated 2 to 3 inches, then compacted. A fabric weed barrier is laid and secured before any material goes down — this is the step most people skip, and it's why weeds push through cheap gravel jobs within a season. Gravel is spread to a consistent depth and raked level. Border edging is installed along any lawn, planter, or hardscape edge to keep material contained. Decomposed granite applications are often finished with a compaction roller for a firmer, cleaner surface.
Citiscapes installs gravel, decomposed granite, river rock, and crushed stone for residential properties across Phoenix and Scottsdale. We use gravel as a functional ground cover in planted beds, as a primary surface material for low-water front yards, and as a finishing element around hardscape features like walkways, patios, and retaining walls.
Gravel jobs look simple — and they are, when done correctly. The problem is that most shortcuts show up within the first monsoon season. Material migrates onto the street, weeds push through barrier gaps, and edges erode into adjacent lawn or concrete. We address all of that upfront with the right excavation depth, a quality barrier, and solid edge containment.
Decomposed granite is the most popular material we install in Phoenix. It's affordable, compacts well for a firm walking surface, and looks at home in the desert environment. For clients who want more texture, we also work with river rock, black lava rock, and crushed granite in a range of colors and sizes.
Gravel is often the final detail that ties a yard together — and it deserves to be installed with the same care as anything else on the project.

Our backyard was nothing but dirt, weeds, and dog crap for years. I was so embarrassed by it. In fact, I tried to avoid going outside so I wouldn't have to look at it. I really wanted a Gazebo and a small shed, but we needed to get concrete slabs first. So I got some quotes for extending the patio and add room for a shed, and to put in a large 12x12 slab for my Gazebo. I was hesitant to reach out to Citiscapes because the job was so small and I was afraid they would be out of my price range. But their reviews were all great, which made me feel more comfortable about going with them over a smaller company. Joey totally understood my vision. He never made me feel like the job was "too small" and I was actually quite surprised that his quote was in line with what I had budgeted. He even priced out things that I wanted to get done in the future. I was so impressed with their work and Joey's professionalism, I reached out to them again for "phase 2" which involved more concrete, installing irrigation, outdoor tile, and a retaining wall for my plants. Again, it was right on budget! I now have the backyard of my dreams and plan to use Citiscapes again when we are ready to do the front yard. You can see the before and after photos below.
